yes, I’ve found about the same thing, but it is getting easier to understand my friends outside of class now with all the practice. Chilean Spanish is known for being fast and having words cut short a lot!

I visited Chile several years ago and found that — in addition to the one-on-one thing — it was much easier to have conversations with adults than with young people, because they spoke more slowly and clearly and used words that were closer to “Classroom Spanish” rather than slang.

Wonderful tales you are sharing of your experience. I missed lunch with the retired THS group @ LaRosas’ today, but received an email w/ your blog. It is great!
I often hear from my nephew in Madrid and his worldwide travels. I love it.

I’ve heard that British university students have similar rituals, with freshmen having to collect funds from passers-by for reasons determined by the upperclassmen. I wonder if the Chileans got it from them!

This is a great study abroad anecdote! I think most of our students’ “best” experiences come from making a mistake or ending up in some difficult situation… and figuring their way out of it. (It usually scares all the prospective students who HAVEN’T been in that type of situation before, though!)

Congrats Sarah. You’ll get used to the bus and the noise. You will think Oxford is the quietest, most “static” place on the planet when you get back. Enjoy the ocean. Not something you get much of in Ohio.
